Korean Box Office's Surprise Phenomena "Begin Again" (2014)?

What? That movie?

Trailer

While the Korean Box Office likes world wide hits such as Frozen (2014) and Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014), it has its own weird tastes and I am not talking just about domestic Korean movies. Within the TOP 20 box office performers in Korea, 11 of them are domestic Korean movies. It could be said to be  great year for Korean movies.

However, looking at this list, you will see an odd film out in the mix. Among the block buster Hollywood movies, there is this little movie.

What am I talking about?

I am talking about "Begin Again" (2014) directed by John Carney and starring Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, Hailee Steinfeld, and Adam Levine.

In the US, the domestic gross for this movie was $16,170,632. So it was not a hit but for a small budget movie, it was not bad. The international gross was  $47,294,229. The surprising thing is that "Begin Again" (2014) made  $25,872,334 in Korea alone. This is 54.7% of the international gross and 40.8% of the movies total $63,464,861 gross.

In Korea, this movie opened on 8/13/14 and stayed in theaters for almost 3 months. If you read my news article about the blood bath in the box office, you would know that this does not often happen in Korea. Here is a link to that article. [link]

The reason for this are many but it could be linked to the fact that the movie is like "easy listening old pop music". It is not challenging in anyway possible which also includes the music in the movie and its a feel good movie.

It is the same reason why you listen to You Light Up My Life  by Debby Boone then and now. It is easy and, at the same time, oddly nostalgic for not a particular time. Just generic nostalgia!

Considering You Light Up My Life  by Debby Boone was released in 1977 and Korea feels like the mid 80s in regard to its social development, it is not a surprise that "Begin Again" (2014) hit hard in Korea and no place else.
